The USA Today has a good article discussing criteria used to determine the success and weaknesses of colleges. The article provides a great example of how old models are hard to break despite changes in the external environment. The adage “change or die” is frequently used in different circles of industry and is applicable to colleges and universities. Having been an online instructor for close to eight years, I’ve been witness to how the “quality” of a student’s experience is often misunderstood simply because the process is compared using the wrong model.
Update: The Chronicle for Higher Education publishes another perspective on this issue.
